Teachers'Day

On the morning of September 14, I arrived at Thongsook College in Thailand and stepped straight into the country’s most revered ceremony: Teacher Appreciation Day combined with the opening convocation. Students in spotless white Thai uniforms knelt in slow motion, flowers lifted high, while professors tied sacred white threads around our wrists—threads that promise knowledge, safety and a journey without detours. The air was thick with sandalwood and Pali chants; for the first time I felt the weight of “respect for teachers” in a language that needs no translation.

The moment the final blessing ended, the sports field shape-shifted into an International Food Carnival. National costumes flashed like suddenly opened parasols: Thai silk ablaze with ruby and emerald embroidery, Myanmar longyi flowing like liquid silver, and Western outfits splashed with pop-art confidence. I slipped into a champagne-gold qipao embroidered with tiny plum blossoms and became an instant photo-magnet for new-found friends.

Under red paper lanterns, Chinese students threw dough in the air, rolled wrappers, and sealed laughter inside plump dumplings. Woks hissed out classics—red-braised pork, Coca-Cola chicken, tomato-and-egg scramble—curling aromas that lured even the cooks from neighboring stalls. Thai classmates counter-attacked with mortar and pestle, pounding green papaya into a symphony of crunch, chili and lime. We fed one another across language barriers: a dumpling for a spoonful of som tam, a chicken wing for a bite of mango sticky rice, every swap a tiny diplomatic treaty.

In the afternoon monsoon arrived ahead of schedule. The sky tore open, rain drilled into the turf, but nobody retreated. On the soccer pitch we slid after every tackle like jet-skis, water pluming behind us. The tug-of-war rope turned into a soaked python; its fibers bit our palms crimson, yet cheers in Thai, Chinese, Burmese and English rose louder than thunder. Between matches, Thai dancers leapt through bamboos that clicked like metronomes, while a Chinese exchange student answered with a swirling tai-chi fan that sprayed silver droplets into the air. Every move said: culture is not a museum piece; it is something you can taste, kick, pull, dance and drench.

At dusk the storm surrendered. A double rainbow unfurled above the grandstand like a neon passport stamp on the day. I wrapped the dripping college flag around my shoulders, feeling its weight—lighter than water, heavier than memory—and whispered a promise: Today is indelible; this journey is priceless.9月14日,我随学校来到泰国东硕学院,亲历了当地最隆重的“拜师节”与开学典礼。
